Ring Cutting Technique

Cutting off the ring means controlling where your opponent can move, forcing them into the corners and along the ropes where they have fewer escape routes. Don’t chase them in a straight line—that’s amateur hour. Instead, move at angles. Step to the side they’re trying to escape to, cutting off that path before they can take it. Think of it like herding, not hunting.

Use small, deliberate steps. Big lunging movements leave you off-balance and easy to counter. Your front foot should point toward where you want them to go, and your positioning should make the center of the ring feel dangerous to them. Feint to make them move, then be waiting where they’re going. Good ring cutting is about anticipation and pressure, making them feel like the walls are closing in even when there’s still space.

Stay patient. Cutting the ring works because it accumulates over rounds. Every time they try to escape and you’re there blocking the path, they expend energy and lose confidence in their ability to move freely. Eventually they stop trying to escape and start trying to fight their way out, which is exactly where you want them.
