Proper Jab Technique Breakdown

Your jab is your most important weapon. Throw it from your chin, not from your hip. Keep that lead hand relaxed until the moment of impact, then snap it straight out like you’re flicking water off your fingers. Your rear hand stays glued to your face while your shoulder rolls up to protect your chin. The power doesn’t come from your arm—it comes from a slight push off your back foot and a subtle rotation of your lead shoulder.

Most fighters telegraph their jab by dropping their hand first or pulling it back before throwing. Don’t do that. The punch starts from where your guard already is. After you land it, snap the hand back to your face faster than it went out. A slow return is an invitation to get countered. Your weight should shift slightly forward onto your lead foot, but don’t overcommit. You need to be ready to move immediately after.

Train your jab until it’s automatic. Throw a hundred a day, minimum. Work it on the heavy bag, the double end bag, during shadow boxing. Change the speed, change the target—head, body, head again. The jab sets up everything else you’ll do in the ring.
