Rolling Under Punches

Rolling under a punch means dipping your head and shoulders in a U-shape while keeping your eyes locked on your opponent. When you see that straight punch coming, bend at the knees and waist, not just your neck. Your head moves in a smooth arc—down and to the side—while your feet stay planted and ready. The goal is to make their punch sail over your shoulder while you end up in perfect position to counter with a hook or uppercut.

Timing matters more than speed. Wait until the punch is actually coming before you roll. Move too early and they’ll adjust. Move too late and you’re eating leather. Practice with a partner throwing slow punches first, then gradually increase the speed. Your roll should feel effortless, almost lazy, because you’re using your whole body efficiently instead of jerking your head around.

Never roll blind. Keep your peripheral vision on your opponent even when you dip. Come up in a different position than where you started—don’t make yourself predictable. After you roll, immediately throw back or move out. Defense without offense just delays the inevitable.
